Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger accused Alan Shearer of deliberate foul play after Newcastle United's skipper helped his team to a 1-0 Premier League win on Saturday.

Arsenal had Gilberto dismissed after 58 minutes for a second bookable offence and were sunk by Nolberto Solano's winner in the 82nd minute of a combative match at St James' Park.

"I do not want to go overboard on Alan Shearer, I just think that he has an influence on referees," Wenger told reporters.

"He is an example of a guy who, when the ball is in the air, goes first for the man and then for the ball and he gets away with a lot.

"I don't understand clearly when the ball is in the air when it is a foul or not. I would like it to be explained so we can work properly in training.

"How many fouls were committed without any attempt to play the ball and without a yellow card? Shearer got a cosmetic one in the 90th minute."

Though they started with some neat passing football in the first half, Saturday was Arsenal's fifth defeat of the season, in which they have won only eight of their 15 league games.

"I am disappointed we lost because now we seem to have a reputation that if you go physical into Arsenal they won't win," he said.

"I feel that many go overboard now and do not let us play football at all and referees let them do it. In Europe, that wouldn't be allowed. We have to decide whether we want football or a judo party."

Wenger, whose side are sixth in the table and a full 17 points behind leaders Chelsea, also complained about the dismissal of Brazilian Gilberto by referee Dermot Gallagher.

"If he deserved to get sent off I need to re-adjust my eyes," he said. The Frenchman separately told Sky Sports News that the club would appeal against the red card.
