The government is to set up the National Commission for Higher Education to provide the government with more effective tools for planning, development and the administration of the education sector.

Education Minister Louis Galea said it was the government's goal to increase student participation in tertiary education and at the University from 22 to 35 per cent and from 66 to 80 per cent in the post-secondary sector in the next 10 years.

The minister was speaking during a public consultation on the setting up of the National Commission for Higher Education, which was announced in the Budget.

The role of the commission would be to advise Government on planning and on the development of the various levels of education.

The public is also invited to send their comments and suggestions on the proposed commission.
