Appreciation - Lino German

Frederick Fenech, Director, International Institute on Ageing UN - Malta writes:

Lino German was an influential figure in the Maltese medical scene. He was an accomplished and respected specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology, a service he provided to the local community for nearly 40 years. He was also a major player in the Maltese medical trade union movement, being secretary of the Malta Medical Association during the difficult and trying years of the late 1970s and 1980s. His excellent book on medical unionism in Malta gave the correct version of the events which coloured the medical scene, especially the 1977 dispute.

In the last 15 years, he developed a deep interest in medical bio-ethics and his Masters degree in bio-ethics 10 years ago gave him a lot of satisfaction. Indeed, he was looking forward to see the publication of his book on the ethics involved in the case of the Gozitan Siamese twins. I am sure his family will see to it that it is.

In all his activities, Lino was organised, meticulous, dedicated and hardworking. He was also a man who always expressed his mind with conviction.

The death of Lino has left a big void not only among his family, but also among his many friends. Those of us who knew him, and this includes his patients, will miss him dearly.

I, for one, since our St Aloysius College and university days, will always remember him. He was my best man at the wedding and I will always treasure his friendship. Beneath his serious exterior, there was a versatile man, a poet and all his student medical colleagues remember with a smile the humorous poem he penned on each and every one of them; an impromptu pianist who used to give us pleasure whenever there was a piano around. In October this year, we had the pleasure to celebrate together the 50th anniversary of our graduation.

Though he was unwell for some time, he continued, to the best of his abilities, with his activities; and his sudden death did come as a shock. We were together on the day before he died as we were both attending a medical lecture.

I am sure his wife Maureen and his children will feel comfort in the fact that Lino was held in high respect in Maltese society; indeed he was honoured by the Malta Government for his services when he was made a Member of the Order of Merit.

I will miss a dear friend, a man of integrity, principle, good sense and strong religious convictions.

PICCININO - CHARLES "Buddy", 9.12.2005.
We'll never forget the day
When you passed away,
We could not understand
Why it had to be that way.

It was so sad,
It was not fair.
You were still young,
You were our friend.

It is still sad,
But we understand,
God took away the best
To look after the rest.

Your friendship
We'll always treasure,
And you'll be in our hearts,
Forever.
In loving memory of our dear friend Buddy. Chris, Jesmond and Tonio.
