Music by Maltese composers

I read with interest Gerard J. Hyland's letter on music in Malta (October 25). Like him, my wife and I have much interest in life in Malta and, like him, we also like to listen to music. I think that the music on those APS Bank-sponsored CDs about which Mr Hyland wrote featured sacred music of the early 20th century.

We saw information in the souvenir booklet and remember being very impressed with the selected works.

When we come to Malta, our preference would be to attend concerts featuring music by Maltese composers who, judging by the quality of their sacred music, must surely have many classical compositions as well.

Perhaps the Manoel Theatre has already promoted such productions, along with other music by Maltese composers. Many concerts feature the more world-renowned composers but we prefer to enjoy either those of the area or music with a nationalistic reputation. This is not only our opinion but also that of friends who love music.

The Times often carries information about efforts being made by Malta's tourist industry to upgrade Malta's facilities. We suggest that initiatives like those of the APS Bank are well publicised to give another way in which this could be achieved.

In the meantime, my wife and I look forward to when next we holiday on your beautiful island.
