WasteServ Malta Ltd., the company responsible for the implementation of Malta's solid waste strategy, has been presented with the Chamber of Engineers' Award for Innovation.

The award, which recognises engineering achievements, was presented to the company by US Ambassador Molly Bordonaro.

The Malta Engineering Excellence Awards were instituted by the Chamber to mark Engineers Day on December 2 and to celebrate innovation, leadership and lifetime achievement by individuals or organisations that make outstanding contributions that leave a significant impact on engineering in society.

Each award consists of a certificate, a prize token and the right to use the MEEA logo.

The Award for Leadership was presented by British High Commissioner Sir Vincent Fean to Raphel Micallef Trigona, managing director of Systec Ltd, local agents for Hewlett Packard.

The Award for Lifetime Achievement, given in memory of Ing. Maurice Debono to an individual who has contributed significantly to the development of engineering, was presented to Joe Muscat, a consultant engineer, by the Minister for Resources and Infrastructure, Ninu Zammit. Alex Tranter, President of the Chamber of Engineers said that engineering played a vital role in improving the quality of people's lives.

The Chamber has embarked on a communications campaign including visits to secondary schools with the aim of attracting students to the sciences and engineering, Mr Tranter said.
