With Labour, old habits die hard. In the run-up to the last local council elections held in Sliema in 2003, in their Programm ta' Hidma (electoral programme) the MLP had categorically declared that a Labour-led council in Sliema would encourage the central government and private enterprise to build underground car parks in Sliema.

So can the same MLP representatives (whose photos had appeared alongside this statement on the Labour's publication) now elected on the Sliema local council, on the basis of that manifesto, explain why they are opposing the underground car park in Qui-Si-Sana?

Excuse me if I'm confused, but isn't what is being proposed at Qui-Si-Sana exactly in line with Labour's thinking, that is (1) an underground car park (2) in Sliema (3) co-financed by the government and private enterprise?

Labour's disagreement on the Qui-si-Sana proposed project raises a very pertinent question: In line with their electoral programme for Sliema, can the MLP tell us where they propose to develop an underground car park?

Now, if Labour's revised position does not reek of political opportunism, I don't know what does! It looks like we Sliema residents are witnessing the umpteenth Labour U-turn - this time on the Qui-Si-Sana underground car park, which can only serve to alleviate our traffic management problems. So, who is basing the issue on party politics now?
