Mgr Martin Portelli's contribution to various sectors of society in Nadur over the past 50 years, particularly in the field of music, was rewarded recently when he was presented with the Gieh in-Nadur annual award by mayor Chris Said.

Mgr Portelli had set up the Jubilate Deo Choir and was the Maestro di Cappella at the Nadur Basilica for a number of years. He also taught music to young musicians of the Mnarja Band.

Last June, Mgr Portelli celebrated 50 years of priesthood and on that occasion he donated all the music he had composed as well as his personal archives to the Nadur parish.

This was the eighth year of the award.

The other recipients have been Kelinu Vella Haber, Joseph Attard, Fr Karm Attard, Joseph Curmi, Frans Camilleri, Joe Debono and Michael Grima.
