A man who defrauded a fuel station of Lm35 when he made use of counterfeit Lm5 bills was yesterday fined Lm1,000.

Joseph Azzopardi, 25, of Rabat, was also given a two-year jail term suspended for four years when he admitted to making use of the counterfeit bills at Cini Service Station, in Marsa and stealing Lm35 worth of diesel in July. He also pleaded guilty to driving a van without a licence.

On handing down judgement, Magistrate Saviour Demicoli noted that Mr Azzopardi had cooperated with the police and paid back the service station.

He banned Mr Azzopardi from driving for a year.

Police Inspector Ian Abdilla prosecuted.

Lawyers José Herrera and Roberto Montalto were defence counsel.
