The Malta Gay Rights Movement, together with the Malta Medical Students Association, will be holding a walk and candlelight vigil in Republic Street, Valletta, today at 7 p.m. to commemorate all those who died of AIDS and others infected by HIV/AIDS.
The activity is being held to mark World Day Against AIDS and is planned to draw attention to an issue that Malta so far still believes it is immune to, the movement said.
The World AIDS campaign has chosen Stop AIDS. Keep The Promise as its theme from this year to 2010.
Even though it is a fact that there is no known cure for HIV/AIDS, what such a day presents is a platform where the challenges posed by the disease can be discussed, the movement said. "Although we cannot 'cure' AIDS, we can prevent its ongoing spread and combat ignorance and prejudice that aggravate it and work against our efforts to stop it," it added.
Attendees should provide their own candle.
