FIFA began the biggest disciplinary investigation in its history yesterday as it examined the violence that marred the World Cup play-off between Turkey and Switzerland earlier this month.

Turkey won the Istanbul match 4-2 but Switzerland qualified for the finals on away goals having won the first leg 2-0. The game ended with players, officials and stewards involved in violent exchanges as they left the pitch.

Swiss player Stephane Grichting was hospitalised while assistant Turkey coach Mehmet Ozdilek has subsequently resigned after TV pictures showed his involvement.

"We have begun the enquiry in Zurich today which will involve interviewing more than 20 people, including the two national coaches, players, officials and technical staff from both countries," said a spokes-man for world soccer's governing body.

"In terms of scope it is the most voluminous disciplinary investigation in the history of FIFA."

Punishments could range from a fine and warning to the suspension of either association but no decision is expected until the early part of next year.

"Because of the scale of the enquiry and the possible sanctions we have to ensure that legally everything is done exactly right," added the spokesman.
