America's Nastia Liukin gained a measure of revenge over compatriot Chellsie Memmel when she took world championship gold in the uneven yesterday, a day after losing out to her rival in the all around event.

The 16-year-old Liukin put in a flowing routine to earn a score of 9.662 to add a gold to the silver she picked up in the all around event, where she finished an agonising 0.001 of a point behind Memmel.

"I knew I'd hit my routine and I knew I had a good chance of getting a medal. When I landed I was just so excited," she said.

Defending co-champion from the 2003 championships, Memmel scored 9.587 to take silver, while Britain's Beth Tweddle won bronze with a tidy 9.575.
