Leaders Celtic suffered a shock 1-0 home defeat by basement club Dunfermline in the Scottish Premier League yesterday but still stay top after rivals Hearts scraped a draw at Motherwell.

Dunfermline took a first-half lead when Greg Ross slotted the ball home from six metres after Andy Todd nodded it down to him on 17 minutes.

Celtic manager Gordon Strachan said he switched styles after failing to break down Dunfermline in the first half.

"After 10 or 15 minutes we thought this style isn't working," he told BBC radio, "And if that style of football is not getting attempts at goal then we changed to plan B which was far more successful as you saw in the second half.

"If we had been better at taking the chances and got the breaks then we were okay."

Celtic have 38 points and Hearts 37 from 16 matches after their 1-1 draw at Motherwell. Motherwell's on-loan Rangers player Brian McLean scored the 40th minute opener and Paul Hartley levelled with a last-minute penalty.

Hearts boss Graham Rix said of his second draw in charge: "We are undefeated and have gained a point on Celtic so it's a decent start."

Champions Rangers, in joint fourth with Kilmarnock on 23 points, play third-placed Hibernian at Easter Road today.
