Italy's coastguard found yesterday the bodies of five more people thought to have drowned when a boat carrying some 200 illegal immigrants ran aground off Sicily last week.

Nine bodies were recovered on Friday near the town of Scicli di Pozzallo, in southeast Sicily, and survivors of the wreck said they thought about 20 people were missing.

Thousands of illegal immigrants try to enter Italy every year after making a dangerous sea crossing from north Africa, often in unseaworthy ships and boats.
