Joseph Portelli could not believe his eyes when he opened his letterbox to find that someone had returned the war medal he had lost two Sundays ago.

Wrapped in a paper serviette, the medal was posted back to its rightful owner a day after the war veteran made an appeal through The Times.

Mr Portelli, 84, was shocked when he returned home after attending the Remembrance Day ceremony in Valletta.

One of the five war medals he had been awarded for serving in the British army had come unpinned from his blazer.

"I am very appreciative of the person that returned the medal, even if I don't know who it was," Mr Portelli said yesterday.

Mr Portelli was given the medal for serving with the British Forces in East Africa during the war.

He is now making it a point to fix the five medals firmly together to avoid similar mishaps in future.
