A Nigerian was remanded in custody after being charged with knowingly infecting two girlfriends with HIV.

Legal sources said this was the first time someone had been charged with knowingly spreading a virus.

The 24-year-old Nigerian, who was residing in Msida, was charged by Inspector Louise Calleja, who accused him of infecting two women with a disease he knew he suffered from.

The Nigerian was also charged with defiling a minor.

The acts he was accused of were allegedly committed last January.

The compilation of evidence against the Nigerian is being held behind closed doors.

Dr Leslie Cuschieri is assisting the accused.
