Seven road contractors, most of whom were engaged on the Italian Protocol road works earlier this year, are transforming a derelict site at Bulebel Industrial Estate into a recreational ground for clients of the Eden Foundation. And they are doing this at no cost.
The land was transferred to the Eden Foundation some time ago by the Malta Development Corporation, but the investment required to rehabilitate the large plot of land meant that the project had to be shelved.
Things took a positive turn earlier this year, however, following the intervention of the Ministry of Urban Development and Roads and the Malta Transport Authority, which secured the sponsorship of a number of road contractors, who offered to carry out the bulk of the infrastructural works - estimated to cost around Lm50,000 - for free.
Speaking during a visit to the site yesterday, Minister for Urban Development and Roads Jesmond Mugliett said that the completion of these recreational grounds will not only improve the quality of life of those who make use of the services of the Eden Foundation, but will also provide an alternative fundraising channel for the philanthropic organisation. The Eden Foundation in fact intends to start organising its social activities there.
The seven contractors that have carried out works on the site so far are Schembri Infrastructures Ltd, Bonnici Bros Ltd, V&C Contractors Ltd, Tal-General Contractors Ltd, Pada Builders Ltd, Polidano Bros Ltd and Asfaltar. Other contractors will be taking work in hand in the coming weeks.
Queen Elizabeth II will be inaugurating the Eden Foundation's new premises during her state visit on Saturday morning.
