Guided tour of Fort Ricasoli

In its series of Sunday tours which are growing in popularity, Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna will conduct a guided tour of Fort Ricasoli in Kalkara tomorrow between 2.30 and 5 p.m.

Fort Ricasoli is in dire need of attention to its fabric and unless urgent repairs are undertaken, it risks being washed away by the sea, the foundation says. Large parts of the fort's sea-facing enceinte have already been lost.

Built on the right flank of Grand Harbour, Fort Ricasoli was designed by Count Antonio Maurizio Valperga who was commissioned by the Order of St John to prepare an overall defence scheme for the southern approaches to the harbour. It was completed in 1698.

The tour is open to all and will be conducted in English by FWA chairman Mario Farrugia. Direct transport is being organised along with a stop for refreshments. Transport will leave at 2 p.m. from in front of the Phoenicia Hotel in Floriana. The visiting party will return to the departure point at 5 p.m.

A fee of Lm3.50 for adult non-members and Lm2 for children non-members will be charged. FWA members will pay Lm2.75 and Lm1.50. The fee includes transport and refreshments. Availability is limited to the capacity of a coach so it is strongly advisable to pre-book.

For bookings call Angelle Buhagiar on 2180 0992 or 2180 9713. e-mail: info@wirtartna.org
