Allied Newspapers Ltd, which publishes The Times and The Sunday Times, is the official media partner for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting being held in Malta next week.

In the run-up to the event, The Times and The Sunday Times are promoting CHOGM in the newspapers and online version which also includes a link to the official CHOGM website.

In addition to this, 4,000 copies of the newspapers will be wrapped in a glossy cover with information on CHOGM. The special edition, which will run from Monday to November 27, will be distributed to the heads of government, delegates and journalists.

Allied Newspapers director Adrian Hillman said the company decided to take this "unique" step because of the magnitude of the event and as the premium media organisation on the island.

"International events of this nature do not happen in Malta often enough. We will be providing them with the newspaper to ensure they are receiving information on everything that's happening at that time. It is important for us that they feel they are getting a special service." Mr Hillman said it was also important for journalists and delegates to get to know about the country and its culture during their stay here.

He explained it was vital for the newspaper to take part since the organisation had a commitment to promoting the Commonwealth.

"This has been part of our statute for many years and this initiative is an effective way of doing it," he said.

"We are also the newspaper of record. When people look back, they will be consulting The Times rather than other media."

He said the company decided not to print more than 4,000 special edition copies because it believes the Maltese public will be adequately served with information on CHOGM through the main newspaper and the relevance to them of the content in the wrap-up would be limited.

CHOGM is also being promoted on the website, through the breaking news section and the various links provided.
