Details of fundraising activities that are being organised for World Children's Day to take place on Sunday were given at a press conference last Tuesday for which McDonald's Malta managing director Melo Hili, chief executive John Correia, marketing executive Joanna Ellis, the president of the Eden Foundation Dr Josie Muscat, and marketing executive Robert Farrugia were present.

McDonald's Malta is participating in this global event for the fourth time and will be contributing Lm1 from every Extra Value Meal sold to help children in the care of the Eden Foundation.

World Children's Day has 30,000 participating McDonald's restaurants from 121 countries and Mr Correia said that it has become the largest fundraising event worldwide and has amassed more than $50 million to date. This day has become an integral part of the McDonald's culture of contributing to the communities in which the firm operates and was instilled by its founder Ray Kroc.

A number of local personalities - DJ Gianni, Corkscrew, Scream Daisy, Mary Spiteri, Enzo Guzman, Freddie Portelli, Fabrizio Faniello, Joseph Chetcuti, Carmel Busuttil, Moira Delia, Mireille Bonello, Carlo Borg Bonaci and others - are offering their help on the day. They will be signing autographs, performing and also serving food from behind the counter in various McDonald's establishments throughout Malta and Gozo - Baystreet, Birkirkara, Bugibba, MIA, St Julian's, The Plaza, Sliema, Valletta and Victoria, Gozo. Every restaurant will have its own programme of fundraising activities - Disney films for kids, face painting, crafts, games with spot prizes, dance classes, a football corner, and photos with Ronald McDonald - available for the public to consult.

People will be able to make their contribution and help the children of the Eden Foundation by taking part in the activities and by purchasing Extra Value Meals on the day.

This year's goal is to raise $50 million worldwide this year alone. Celebrities such as Destiny's Child, the Duchess of York, Paul Newman and Carl Lewis, are supporting the event this year and Destiny's Child have released their new single Stand Up For Love, which will be used as the 2005 World Children's Day Anthem.
