A suspected gas explosion destroyed a building in the Spanish city of Tarragona, killing a mother and her three children, officials said yesterday.

The explosion, soon after 11 p.m. (2200 GMT) on Thursday, brought the upper floors of the building in the centre of the northeastern Catalan city crashing down. Six other people were injured, including the father of the dead children. Officials said a German tourist was among those hurt.
