The President and Mrs Fenech Adami returned to Malta yesterday evening at the end of a four-day official visit to Spain.

On Wednesday, the President met Pasqual Maragall, President of the regional government of Catalunya in Barcelona.

He held other meetings with Ernest Benach I. Pascual, Speaker of the Catalan Parliament, and with Joan Clos, Mayor of Barcelona.

Dr Fenech Adami addressed a business seminar organised by Malta Enterprise, similar to the one held in Madrid last Monday.

In his address, Dr Fenech Adami noted that trade between Malta and Catalunya dates back to the early 1700s when the "indiana" cotton factories of Barcelona imported Maltese cotton.

Malta received privileged treatment by Spain in 1728, which permitted the entry of cotton from Malta and prohibited the entry of cotton textiles and printed linen from other destinations.

The last event of his visit was a tour to Medichem SL, a leading company in custom manufacturing for the life-sciences industry.

Medichem has a plant at Hal Far.
