Nationalist MEP Simon Busuttil met top General Workers' Union officials as part of a Constituency Week that took place last week.
The meeting focused on a number of EU legislative proposals currently being considered by the European Parliament, including the Port Services Directive, the Service Directive and the Working Time Directive.
On the Port Services Directive, the two sides agreed that the new law should not envisage the possibility of self-handling in ports as this would hit local workers and favour foreign workers who are often paid much less.
However, Dr Busuttil said that he was generally in favour of the proposal on port services and asked for more details on the GWU's objections to this proposal.
The GWU briefed the MEP on the participation of the trade union in different EU programmes.
The meeting was attended by GWU secretary general Tony Zarb, GWU president Salvu Sammut as well as the two GWU deputy secretary generals, Gejtu Mercieca and Michael Parnis.
Dr Busuttil was accompanied by his parliamentary assistant, Kevin Mizzi.
