Ambassador Johannes Kyrle, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Austria, was in Malta last week for a double celebration. He officially inaugurated the Embassy of Austria at Whitehall Mansions, Ta' Xbiex, on Monday evening along with the Ambassador of Austria to Malta, Dr Elisabeth Kehrer.

In the presence of President and Mrs Fenech Adami there was then the official celebration of Austria's national day on the 50th anniversary of the withdrawal of the occupying powers from Austria, ten years after the end of World War II.

Speeches were delivered by Dr Kyrle, President Eddie Fenech Adami and Dr Kehrer, all of whom stressed the excellent state of relations between the two countries. This is Austria's first permanent representation in Malta since 1797 as the Austrian mission was closed after the departure of the knights of Malta.

Until the opening of this Embassy, the Austrian Embassy in Rome handled relations with Malta; Austrian interests had been looked after by honorary consul-general Michael Bianchi, who will continue to support the new embassy.

The last years brought an intensification of the good bilateral relations, especially in the economic affairs. Six Austrian banks have subsidiaries in Malta, and Vienna International Airport is shareholder of the Malta International Airport.

Projects in the fields of environment and energy might follow. Due to these increases in co-operation and following Malta's accession to the European Union, the government of Austria decided in 2004 to open an Embassy in Malta.

The reception was held in Whitehall Mansions' foyer, which was decked with a large Austrian flag for the occasion.

Among those present for Monday's reception were senior civil servants, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cecilia Attard Pirotta, Ambassadors and senior diplomats, members of the business community and Austrian residents in Malta.

Whitehall Mansions also hosts other embassies: the British High Commission and those of the Netherlands, Spain and Portugal.

Visitor from Melbourne

Benedict Soler is the president of the Maltese Australian Association of Melbourne, Victoria, which was formed by his late father Frank in Melbourne on September 8, 1964. Frank Soler was a very active man and organiser of social events for the Maltese community since the early Fifties.

Like his father, Ben, as he is affectionately known, still speaks fluent Maltese and is very greatly interested in Maltese culture and folklore. He is currently on his second visit to Malta after almost 30 years. Ben writes poetry and sings in several languages. He is also an actor and is very fond of heraldry. He finds that Malta has changed enormously.

While here, he will be presenting President Fenech Adami with a painting depicting the Shelter of Peace, a monument erected recently in Melbourne to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the award of the George Cross to Malta.

The monument, which he himself designed, is "a childhood dream", he says, which he is proud to have realised. It is situated in a very prominent place in Melbourne, not far from the State War Memorial, known as the Shrine of Remembrance.

Remembering Daniel Pearl

Distinguished personalities, among them former Presidents of the Republic and ambassadors, gathered at Villa Arrigo, San Pawl tat-Targa, on October 14, for an anniversary dinner to remember Daniel Pearl, the American Jewish foreign correspondent of The Wall Street Journal, who was kidnapped and murdered in Karachi, Pakistan, on January 29, 2002, while investigating the case of convicted shoe bomber Richard Reid.

Hosting the dinner was the indefatigable Shelley Tayar, a leader of the local Jewish community. Ms Tayar said she was also dedicating the evening to her late husband George, who passed away in 1994.

Shelley Tayar intended the dinner not only as a celebration of Daniel's birthday (he was born on October 10, 1963) but also as a tribute to this refined man of culture (he was an accomplished violinist) and to his ideals of religious tolerance.

To "avenge" his son's heinous killing (his decapitation by Islamic extremists was shown on video), Professor Judea Pearl set a foundation dedicated to the eradication of fanatical hatred and the spreading of love and understanding among nations and among adherents of different religions. He also set up the Danny Pearl Music Day, which grows in scope every year. This year some 400 concert snd musical events were held in 38 countries.

Shelley Tayar read out greetings from Professor Pearl, from the Imam of Malta and from Lord Janner, president of the Commonwealth Jewish Council.

To provide the musical touch at the dinner, Shelley Tayar engaged Russian accordionist Yuri Chryguine, who lives in Malta, and saxophonist Sammy Murgo. Actually it was more than a touch, because Yuri played several classical melodies around each table in the first half of the programme, while Sammy paid individual musical tributes to practically every guest present - with the tunes suggested by Shelley, of course!

The "Jewish" touch - since this was a Sabbath meal and the day after Yom Kippur - goblets of honey were placed on each table, and each one had to look inside the goblet and see themselves smiling in order to have a sweet year...

In a short speech, President Emeritus Guido de Marco, who served as President of the United Nations General Assembly in 1989-90, spoke about the ideals of tolerance and coexistence among nations and the principles upheld by Daniel Pearl and all lovers of peace. He also referred to his contacts with Israeli and Arab leaders and to the prospects of peace in the Middle East. He naturally praised Shelley Tayar's initiative which was inspired by these lofty ideals.

Among Ms Tayar's guests were former President Censu Tabone and Mrs Tabone, the American Ambassador, Molly Bordonaro, and her husband Matthew, William Grant, deputy chief of mission at the US Embassy and his wife Mrs Knight and their daughter Lindsey, British High Commissioner Vincent Fean and his wife Anne, German Ambassador Georg Merten, Rev. Professor Peter Serracino Inglott, Professor and Mrs Lino Cutajar and their daughter Louise, Dr Rydi Kovacs, Jeff Anderson, public affairs officer at the US Embassy, Wilfred Kenely, Mr and Mrs Giovanni Pappalettera, Rosette Fenech, Dame Françoise Tempra and her sister Mina, Mr and Mrs Tony Cassar Darien, Dr and Mrs Victor Nezval, Dr and Mrs Andy Welsh, Philip Lingard, Mr and Mrs Laurence Grech, Mr and Mrs Adrian Puglevich, Margaret Zammit and Dr Simon Mercieca.

YTC's annual reunion at Dolmen

The Youth Travel Circle (YTC) celebrated its annual reunion on October 22 with a pasta night at the Dolmen Resort Hotel, Qawra. The event was attended by about 350 persons who have at some time travelled to Livigno or to La Nuvola farmhouse in Tuscany with YTC. Present for the evening was Mariano Galas, owner of La Nuvola farmhouse and YTC's skiing director in Livigno.

This event, organised by YTC's Ski and Snowboard Club - Malta, marks the launch of the 2005/2006 skiing season with YTC. Club members look forward to this event, as they have the opportunity to meet and discuss their skiing plans for the coming season.

Throughout the evening, videos were shown of Maltese skiers enjoying themselves on the Livigno slopes, or in the village of Livigno, which is well known for its duty-free shopping and excellent night-life.

At the end of the evening, YTC's skiing organiser, Stellina Galea, addressed the gathering, followed by Mr Galas who referred to his long-standing connection with Malta, seeing that most of those present had at times been instructed by him on the Livigno slopes or been hosted by him at La Nuvola.

As a thank you gesture to all those who have travelled with YTC in the past, YTC, in collaboration with Air Malta and La Nuvola Farmhouse, organised a competition for those present, and the two winners - Antoine Farrugia and Victor Buhagiar - will be off on a skiing holiday to Livigno and a holiday at La Nuvola in Tuscany.

For further information about Livigno and La Nuvola Farmhouse contact Stellina Galea at YTC on 2142-1464, 2141-4811, 2123-3893, 9942-0377 or visit YTC Website at www.ytctravel.org

The cosmetic company Alta Care Laboratoires has sponsored the sash of Miss Mondo in the beautiful setting of the tourist marine port at Leuca, in front of 5,000 spectators and many distinguished guests from the TV world and other institutions.

Among the members of the distinguished jury were veteran Italian TV personality Luciano Rispoli, as president, and Hungarian actress Andrea Osvart.

Alta Care Laboratoires crowned the Italian beauty who will represent Italy at the Miss World international contest that will take place on December 10 on the island of Hainan in China.

At the end of the evening an exclusive party was held in honour of Ms Bruscoli.

Ms Bruscoli, accompanied by the management of Miss Mondo, will soon be the guest of Alta Care in Malta, at the Caviar Spa Bedrooms of the five-star Fortina Spa, before leaving to China to compete for the title of Miss World.

Coeliac annual conference in Edinburgh

Mary Rose Caruana, chairman of the Coeliac Association Malta, Sandra Russo, Raymond Caruana and Dr Christian Scerri recently attended the annual conference of the Association of European Coeliac Societies (AOECS) held in Edinburgh.

The association, through its medical adviser Dr Scerri, is currently represented and chairs the board of directors of AOECS. Mr Caruana is a member of the working group Helping Coeliacs and Consumer Affairs.

The theme of the conference was the latest scientific news on the coeliac disease and gluten-free diets. It was dedicated to various medical presentations given by a wide range of speakers. Professor Peter Howdle, consultant gastroenterologist at St James Hospital in Leeds chaired the sessions.

Professor Marku Maki, head of the Paediatric Research Centre at the University College of Tampere, Finland, who also runs a multi-disciplinary Coeliac Disease Study Group, spoke on the epidemiology of coeliac disease and looked at the incidence of the disease across Europe as well as the modes of presentation and diagnosis.

Professor Carlo Catassi, Associate Professor at the Politecnico delle Marche in Ancona, Italy, and co-director at the University of Maryland for the Centre for Coeliac Research, spoke on the Italian study on gluten micro-challenge, which showed that while no overt symptoms were associated with the ingestion of up to 50 mg of gluten per day, minor histological changes were present.

Although these results were the basis of a resolution passed during last year's AOECS general assembly, AOECS is urging the reduction of the accepted gluten level in gluten-free rendered food to 100 ppm from the present 200 ppm.

Dr Joe West, specialist registrar in Gastroenterology in Nottingham, spoke about the complications of coeliac disease. Dr West reviewed the clinical history of a large number of coeliac individuals from the general practitioners registry of the UK.

Ruth Dadswell from the Food Allergy Branch of the Food Standards Agency, UK, spoke on allergen labelling and key issues for implementing the new regulations in the UK. The work of the Food Standards Agency is to raise awareness on food allergy and intolerance, to implement legislation and labelling rules.

Dr Enrique Mendez, from the Centro Nacional de Biotechnologia, Spain, spoke on developments in gluten testing. Dr Mendez is the leading world authority on the development of methods for the testing of gluten residues in food, especially heat-treated food. His method, the Mendez method, has received recognition by the Codex committee as the standard testing method. It is capable of measuring gluten level down to three ppm.

Dr W. Dickey from the Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, spoke about mass screening or selective testing. He said direct health problems should be identified by efficient case finding and not screening.

In addition to the scientific part, the general assembly discussed the use and licensing of the crossed grain symbol as well as its involvement in two proposed pan-European studies on the disease. This has provided the representatives of the Coeliac Association Malta with invaluable insight which will be used for the benefit of the coeliac community in Malta.

The Coeliac Association Malta would like to thank Air Malta for assisting with conference expenses by sponsoring subsidised flights to the UK.

Jamaican coffee at hotel inauguration

Tazza D'Oro Jamaican Blue Mountain, a rare and prestigious coffee, was served to the many distinguished guests present for the official opening of the SAS Radisson Golden Sands. The coffee was roasted at the Tazza D'Oro plant in Rome and airfreighted to Malta in time for the inauguration.

Towards the eastern end of the island of Jamaica runs the majestic range of hills known as the Blue Mountains. At 5,500 feet, the land is thickly wooded and maintained as a forest reserve. Below this line, the terrain, the rainfall pattern, the Blue Mountain mist, and the overall conditions are perfectly suited for the cultivation of the world's most distinguished coffee, the Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee.

Max Fiochetto, CEO, and Simone Casella, sales manager of Tazza D'Oro Rome, and Stephen Rausi and Peter Lawson, Tazza D'Oro representatives in Malta, were present for the event.

Nadya German was awarded a bursary from the Manipulation Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (MACP) in the UK, to attend the World Congress on Manual Therapy, held in Rome last month.

She was the only delegate from Malta who attended. The congress, which focussed on the spine, was attended by over 600 delegates from 34 countries, with an array of speakers, many of whom are world renowned experts in the physiotherapy management of spinal pain.

The latest research in the field of physiotherapy for the spine was discussed with the first day dedicated to the neck, the second to the back and the last day on pain management. New techniques highlighting the beneficial effects of manual hands-on physiotherapy and specific exercises to retrain muscle control and improve core stability were presented.

Ms German is a specialist musculoskeletal physiotherapist and for the past two years has been working in private practice. She previously practised in London teaching UK hospital staff for 20 years, having undergone her physiotherapy training and obtained her Master's Degree in the UK.

Jonathan Galea recently joined the Commonwealth Secretariat in London as Political Affairs Officer in the Political Affairs Division (PAD). This division leads the secretariat's high-profile democracy and good governance programme and works closely with the Secretary-General, providing him with advice and support on all political issues.

Prior to joining the secretariat, Mr Galea spent ten years at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also serving in its London, Moscow and Beijing missions. Handling Political Affairs at the Malta High Commission in London (1999-2003), he served as a country delegate to several functional, budgetary and administrative committees of the Commonwealth and the International Maritime Organisation.

Mr Galea graduated with double first-class honours degree in Economics from the University of Malta in 1994 with a thesis on Economic and Monetary Union in the EU. He was awarded scholarships to the College of Europe, Reading University and the University of Sussex, reading for an MA degree in Contemporary European Studies at the Sussex European Institute (SEI) in 1995.

Maria Mifsud Bonnici has been awarded a Master of Science degree in Sport and Exercise Physiology from the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at University College Chichester, UK.

Ms Mifsud Bonnici had previously obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Malta in 1992.

Physiology is one of the main factors contributing to high performance in elite athletes and a major part of the success of top athletes in the world is accounted for through sport science. Ms Mifsud Bonnici, herself a top athlete, winner of the 2000 Sportswoman of the Year Award and five times National Female Triathlon Champion, National Female Duathlon Champion and Female Triathlete of the Year, is aware of Malta's needs for such expertise so that athletes can achieve good results on the international scene.

Her thesis "The Effects of Low Substrate Availability on Thermoregulation during Submax-imal Exercise in a Hot Dry Environment", which has been awarded an 'A' grade, has investigated whether repeated training sessions or competitions, which normally deplete the athlete's muscle glycogen stores, can limit effective thermoregulation during subsequent exercise and hence result in impaired performance.

Ms Mifsud Bonnici has worked with top physiologists in the UK who have accompanied athletes to the Athens Olympic Games achieving medals in track cycling, boxing, diving, and sailing. She will be helping athletes and their coaches benefit from her expertise in sport physiology, which when blended with sport psychology and biomechanics and a well-devised training programme, guarantees successful performance.

Sarah Anastasi, BE&A(Hons), has been awarded a Master's degree (cum laude) in Urbanism from the Technical University of Delft in The Netherlands.

Her thesis, entitled Accessibility and Mobility through Open Public Space Design: The Harbour Region - Malta",  focused on achieving sustainable urban growth by ensuring accessibility and mobility.

The thesis resulted in a strategic spatial design for the harbour region and two design projects in the Marsa area, namely a transportation interchange and a regional city park.

Ms Anastasi, who is currently residing in The Hague, is the daughter of Josef and Tessa Anastasi of Swieqi.

An Icon is Born

A stunning new calendar which captures some of Gozo's most beautiful girls in some of the island's most spectacular locations was launched recently. The Jubilee Calendar 2006 was announced by Café Jubilee director Alex Scicluna.

The photo shoot, which took place during July, utilised the talents of an international acclaimed team: photographer Alice Hawkins, stylist Samantha Willoughby and make-up by Gemma Smith. The industry experts, who flew down to Malta specifically for the shoot, have worked for big brands such as Vogue, Pop, Bon, and Arena.

The models for the shoot were chosen following a careful selection process by the photographer and Mr Scicluna.

Mr Scicluna explained: "The idea first came to me when a close friend who was visiting Gozo created a small scale calendar for his friends using photography that he took while on holiday. I thought that would be a fantastic idea to help push the Jubilee brand even further, through something that was closely connected to Gozo, where Jubilee first took off."

The Cafe Jubilee Calendar 2006 is available from all Jubilee outlets and leading stationers and newsagents.
