Although Gzira Labour councillors Joe Zammit, Anthony Abela and Anthony Grech (The Sunday Times, September 25) stated that they are acting in Gzira's best interests, they have never put this into practice.

They are intentionally trying to hinder the council's work by abandoning meetings using frivolous excuses, such as when I was interrupted while commenting during the annual locality call when I had the right to do so, that the agenda excludes copies of correspondence (they are aware that the same procedure has been used for the past 11 years), that the council did not have a quorum to hold the meeting when there were six out of seven councillors present and questioned why one of the items ('Other Matters') was listed on the agenda when it has been practice since the first sitting.

It should be pointed out, regardless of the dispute of who should have been appointed mayor, the Nationalist councillors did not disrupt meetings during the seven-month period led by Anthony Abela. As documented in the council's minutes, all matters brought forward during the meeting were discussed and approved.

The council is following the same procedures for meetings which have been in place for the past 11 years, including the period during which Mr Abela was mayor.

The Labour councillors' arrogant attitude - especially Mr Zammit - has led the four Nationalist councillors to reunite and decide who should be elected mayor.

Even though Mr Zammit, Mr Abela and Mr Grech are trying to justify their attitude, their claims are based on false arguments and allegations. However, despite this disappointing situation, the council will keep working in the residents' best interests.
