Unlike Mr Alex Vella (The Sunday Times, October 30) I will not resort to accusations of outright lies and I don't know what else besides, which he made in his emotional outburst. It is a pity any NGO should have the kind of leadership which cannot make an argument without losing its head.
Of all NGOs, the Ramblers' Association of Malta, of which Mr Vella is the secretary, is the least suited to defend the NGOs' unreasonable decision to come out so dogmatically against a golf course at Ix-Xaghra l-Hamra before the environmental impact assessment has even been concluded. It is truly an unholy alliance which sees these other NGOs embracing the ramblers' interests.
If it is the precious (to them) garigue which the NGOs truly want to protect at the Xaghra, the ramblers should be ejected from the NGOs' alliance - the garigue exists precisely because few people indeed ever go to the Xaghra. Ramblers traipsing all over the place would put paid to that. As far as the Xaghra garigue is concerned, the Ramblers' Association might just as well be the Tramplers' Association.
