I read with interest the note about the poor state of High Street, Hamrun in On The Dot and would like to add my comments about some of the other main streets which have been left to go to rack and ruin.

If one drives along Naxxar Road, from the roundabout near Kind's, past the Lija cemetery and on to the HSBC Bank at Birkirkara, one will notice the terrible state of this road.

A couple of hundred metres further on, a drive up Fleur-de-lys Road will guarantee you add to any aches and pains you have, go round the roundabout near the new BOV offices and take the Rabat road past Farsons and on to the next traffic lights.

This road is a travesty and has been allowed to deteriorate.

These are just three unmaintained roads in my area; if one had to mention just the main roads that are in need of attention then the list would be interminable.

I have no doubt that the roads rebuilt under the Italian protocol and with EU funds needed doing up but why were they given preference over other more vital thoroughfares?

Of course, CHOGM comes to mind as all heads of state will be driven along them from the airport to their hotel of residence and also to Valletta. This is the only reason why these particular roads were chosen for rebuilding and no explanation from the authorities will make me change my mind.
