The L-Istrina team and Bank of Valletta have launched the BOV L-Istrina Piggy Bank Campaign.

About 65,000 students in the 2,800 classes from all schools will be involved in raising funds for charity. The bank is once again giving out about 7,000 piggy banks it uses for its Young Savers campaigns. Last year, school children collected over Lm12,000.

The BOV L-Istrina Campaign was launched during a press conference at the Presidential Palace, in Valletta and was addressed by President Eddie Fenech Adami, Mary Fenech Adami, Community Chest Fund chairman, Andrew Agius Muscat, PBS chairman, Peppi Azzopardi, coordinator of the L-Istrina Campaign and Tonio Depasquale, chief executive officer of Bank of Valletta.

"Our objective is to promote the values of solidarity among our young people... At this time of the year, however, we are working with the L-Istrina team to encourage children to donate a small part of their savings to help those who are most in need...

"Our role extends beyond providing support at a financial and economic level. Indeed, our business credo Your Success, Our Goal may be easily extended to our support of L-Istrina 2005 where our financial contribution and logistical support throughout this campaign will ensure the success of this most worthy cause. To support this goal, we are today pledging to top up the funds collected by the school children by Lm 10,000," Mr Depasquale said.

Two piggy banks are being distributed to each class in all primary and secondary schools. The piggy banks will be collected next month and the full amount raised will be announced during the live broadcast of the BOV L-Istrina on TVM on December 26.
