Catechism classes in preparation for First Holy Communion are an unnecessary bureaucracy, suggests Andrea Burlo (October 24). According to him, religion lessons at school are enough.

The problem does not lie with children having to attend catechism classes after school hours. The real problem is that today's children have too many other activities after school hours. To name a few: private lessons, gym, drama, ballet, sports and so on and so forth. Which are all good in themselves but the children are left with no time to relax at home.

With all due respect to primary school teachers (who instruct all subjects to the class), not all of them are in a position to teach religion as it should be taught.

The dedicated lay people who teach catechism and prepare children for First Holy Communion and Confirmation (most of them for the whole week) make a lot of sacrifices without any financial return.

They are only rewarded by God for what they do. Let us show them some gratitude and appreciation and not make them feel unwanted and undesired.

It is high time that all parents realise their priorities and their responsibility in bringing up their children with the necessary values which will make them better citizens of tomorrow's society in the true sense of the word.
