Zebbug mayor steps down

The mayor of Zebbug yesterday announced her resignation.

In a statement, Paula Vella Sciriha, who was elected on a Labour Party ticket, said she was giving up her post as mayor as well as that of councillor for a number of reasons, of which she had informed party leader Alfred Sant.

When contacted, Dr Vella Sciriha declined further comment.

The outgoing mayor was elected last March, which was the first time she had contested a local council election.

Dr Vella Sciriha expressed her "absolute and unconditional" faith in the Labour Party and its leadership.

She also promised to continue working for the benefit of Zebbug and within the party.
