Saint Liam won a stretch-drive duel with Flower Alley to capture the Breeders' Cup Classic on Saturday in New York and give jockey Jerry Bailey his fifth career victory in the prestigious $4 million race.

The triumph marked a record 15th career Breeders' Cup victory for the 48-year-old Bailey.

Saint Liam, who broke from the 12th post in the 13-horse field, won the 1 1/4-mile race in 2:01.49 over a fast track on a chilly day.

The win by Saint Liam, the race favourite at 2-1 odds, puts the five-year-old Kentucky-bred bay in position to possible win the Eclipse Award as the Horse of the Year.
