Existing pavements

I refer to the letter Missing Pavement published on September 28 by Charles Vassallo.

Mr Vassallo mentioned that he has been insisting since February for the pavement in Braille Street, Sta Venera to be done and apparently he had been promised that the pavement would be given priority in the next legislature, which is the current one. Surely I cannot pledge to carry out the promises made by my predecessor.

For the benefit of readers, I have to point out that in a stretch down Braille Street from the one published in the photo above the article, parallel to the residential houses, pavements already exist but for some reason Mr Vassallo preferred not to mention them.

Though as mentioned Braille Street is a stretch of only 80 metres, according to the new rules set by the National Commission Persons with Disability, pavements should be at minimum 1.2 metres wide.

Having said that, if the council decides to undertake construction of the mentioned stretch of pavement, either access to the road will have to be closed for heavy vehicles to the detriment of local businesses or else no parking will be allowed on the other side of the road to the detriment of residents. Sta Venera is already short of parking spaces and surely cannot afford to reduce them further.
