Vandal acts were perpetrated on the Wignacourt aqueducts and in Tarxien over the weekend and have been condemned by the Resources and Infrastructure Ministry and the Tarxien local council.

Unidentified persons sprayed words in a foreign language on the aqueducts opposite the Farsons brewery on Sunday night, the ministry said.

The damage was noticed early on Monday morning by ministry employees, who are carrying out paving and lighting works along the stretch of 361 arches.

Workers from the Restoration Unit stopped other jobs to carry out the necessary intervention on the historic structure.

"This act of vandalism is one of a series during these last months, including the dumping of waste in many arterial roads," the ministry pointed out.

Resources and Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit has appealed to anyone who has information on who carried out the vandalism to inform the police.

The Tarxien local council deplored the vandalism that was carried out on the night between Friday and Saturday, where a number of traffic signs were ripped out and, where this was not possible, bent.

"This is the work of a coward," mayor Pawlu Farrugia said, urging the authorities to organise more surveillance at night.
