A Maltese expert in ethics, Emmanuel Agius, has been appointed to the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies (EGE) by the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Durao Barroso.

One of 15 experts on the group, Rev. Prof. Agius is the first Maltese to be appointed to such a position.

He heads the department of moral theology at the University of Malta and is an expert in professional and philosophical ethics.

The individuals appointed on this group are selected directly by the EU for their expertise and personal qualities.

The EGE is an independent, pluralist and multidisciplinary body advising the European Commission on ethics in science and new technologies in connection with the preparation and implementation of community legislation and policies. The 15 members are high-level experts in disciplines such as biology and genetics, informatics, law, philosophy and theology.

The range of issues studied by the EGE in the past few years have ranged from technological implants in the human body to patents deriving from stem cell research.

Prof. Agius is a member of Malta's National Bioethics Committee and is editor of the Future Generations Journal. He has edited several books on ethics.
