The subject of the article Opposition To One-Way System In Msida (October 6) was a petition against a one-way system implemented by the Msida local council and the Public Transport Authority last July in the Tower Gate Street area.

I cannot understand what the fuss is all about. All of Msida has been - for a long time - a one-way zone except for the Tower Gate Street area. It was therefore logical that this remaining part of Msida became a one-way zone too. In fact the traffic management project was several years overdue because of the sheer volume of traffic passing through the area.

Most of the signatures on the petition mentioned in the article are not of residents of the locality, but of people who drive through our roads frequently and are unwilling, if they can help it, to make the small detour to get to the Regional Road. This is manifestly unfair to the residents of the area who have suffered heavy traffic pollution for many years.

The disruption of traffic mentioned in the petition is a load of unadulterated balderdash. Traffic flow has now been distributed over a number of roads instead of one or two congested ones, with the result that the traffic moves significantly better. Also because of the lesser congestion, one can traverse the area quicker from Regional Road to Gzira and vice versa.

Of course the ultimate solution is the long overdue road that has been shelved for many years, linking the Gzira waterfront to the Kappara roundabout.

Congratulations to the Msida local council and the ADT for a job well done.
