I refer to Msida mayor Carmelo Grima's letter (October 11) regarding the new one-way system created near the Msida Circus area.

I would like to make some points:

The mayor mentioned that most of the people who signed for this petition are non-residents. Such a one-way system is not only affecting the Msida residents! Do people who may use this area for work or personal visits everyday not have a right to protest?

Dr Grima mentioned a simple example of how one can reach Msida Circus from Rue D'Argens. However, this becomes a huge detour for drivers passing from this road during school hours when School Street is closed, especially if they live in St Anthony Street. This becomes a nightmare also when someone comes from Gzira and has to go to University Street or the area behind it. It's the only way up!

With regards to consultation, one has to point out that the only meeting between the local council and the public was held weeks after the signs were already fixed (although they were still not in use). Many people who raised concerns during this meeting were never acknowledged. The mayor says that the Msida local council is receiving a number of favourable comments about this system. It looks strange when one considers that there are over 1,600 persons who have so far signed against this system, while others who are against this system do not even know about this petition and haven't signed yet.

If the local council wants to make roads safer for drivers and pedestrians, it is better if they invest in a small roundabout in the small square at the end of Victor Denaro Street, corner with Tower Gate Street. Do we need to wait for a fatal accident to happen before someone acts? This was suggested to our council a long time ago, but fell on deaf ears.

Parents whose children attend the Msida Primary School protested against this new traffic system saying that it is not safe for their children. Allegedly, even policemen have been complaining about this system.

If the local council has Msida residents' interests at heart, then I'm sure it will listen to these 1,600 people and to their valid and important remarks.
