My friend has just returned home from a wonderful holiday on our precious island. It is not the country as a whole or most of us Maltese who are at fault but he sent me some pictures which he took while here and, to say the least, it puts most of us to shame. One would have thought that we have learnt the lesson - to keep our island clean. However, I think it will take another 10 years for us to learn this. To mention just one of the complaints a lot of us make - the over-flowing of concrete mix, from the mixers. One instance is the continuous flowing of this mixture onto Wied Ghomor Street, in St Julians, where a lot of foreign students attend a nearby school. What a shame to see people wading through the mire. Have the owner of the sites no responsibility at all? Surely the owner should warn the driver of the "mixer" to pay a bit more attention and clean up afterwards.
Something has to be done about this and other complaints of pollution around us.
And what are the rest of the goody goody citizens doing? Should they not raise their voices as well? Let's make a great effort and get the minister in charge of the environment to organise a Keep Malta Tidy Week.
Who knows, maybe we grown-ups will learn from our children to keep our small but precious island clean and free from pollution.
