The report by Duncan Barry entitled Opposition To One-Way System In Msida (October 6) gives the impression that the residents of this area are up in arms against the new traffic management system that has been implemented. Nothing is further from the truth. In fact, to take an example, the changing of Gerry Zammit/Tower Gate Street (one street in actual fact) to one-way was the result of long-standing requests to the local authorities as a result of frequent car accidents and the danger to pedestrians crossing the road. With the new traffic system, the residents have heaved a sigh of relief as the whole area is now more organised and an atmosphere of good order has resulted.

The mayor of Msida has rightly said (as reported) that he learnt that most of the people who are signing the petition are non-residents. This was an open secret. It appears to be a bit of an affront to the residents to get the support of Nardu from Kirkop or Philip of Zebbug to try and influence what happens in our locality. On the other hand, many residents in the immediate vicinity were not approached, perhaps in the knowledge of the overwhelming support for these changes. Surely such a strategy is a clear indication of a weak case.

The crux of the matter is that there are two roads that go from the same point and end at the same location: Msida Circus. Both are rather narrow, one has a dangerously sharp bend and accidents are known to have been frequent. So how can anyone dispute the logic and wisdom of making both roads, i.e. Zammit/Tower Gate and Brockdorf, one-way and working for fluent traffic from Rue D'Argens to Msida Circus, the Regional Road and beyond, and vice-versa?

I applaud the ADT for implementing a new system after obvious deep thought and planning. I am sure the mayor will have the thanks and support he deserves in standing by these beneficial changes in our community and will not bend to pressure that may represent sectoral interests.
