Situation in Floriana

I refer to the letter by Joe Cauchi (Floriana Shame, August 25). The real shame is that certain people like Mr Cauchi, to make a point, make the most unfair of statements.

Mr Cauchi stated that no one had ever lifted a finger to do anything worthwhile as regards to the environment in Floriana. Every genuine Florianite knows that our town underwent a period of unprecedented and ongoing development between 1998 and 2004. Slow but sure progress was also being registered by the local council with the government over the complete rehabilitation of The Mall Garden.

All this progress that was being made in Floriana was unfortunately abruptly arrested with the election of the present council which has lacked people at the helm who are capable of infusing it with the necessary enthusiasm, commitment and sense of direction. Thankfully, this apathetic local council has already moved into the second and final part of its mandate and people in Floriana are, even now, looking forward to once again having a local government which can deliver.

The sad situation facing Floriana at the moment is not only due to any shortcomings on the part of the authorities but mostly due to a local council which is plodding along wearily without any enthusiasm, plan or vision whatsoever.
