Mosta and Melita on maximum points

Mosta and Melita maintained their perfect start to the women's championship last Sunday when they notched their second successive win against Raiders and Qormi respectively.

These two sides are currently sharing top spot in the standings with champions Hibernians who have also collected maximum spoils from their opening two outings.

Melita, despite taking to the field of play shorn of several regular players, were still too strong for the league newcomers and could have scored a more pronounced win had it not been for some fine goalkeeping from Qormi custodian Francis Magri.

Qormi should be commended for their efforts on Sunday as they showed a marked improvement from their dismal performance in the 20-0 thrashing suffered to Hibernians on the opening day of the league championship.

Melita could have taken the lead after just two minutes but Kelly Agius miscued her shot with only Magri to beat. The Amateurs eventually drew first blood five minutes from half-time, Connie Scicluna drilling a low shot past Magri.

Melita doubled their advantage early in the second half when Lisanne D'Amato pounced on a bad Qormi clearance and scored with an angled shot.

Oriana Bedingfield hit Melita's third soon after when she poked home the rebound after Agius's shot hit the upright.

Melita could have added to their lead on 75 minutes but Lorraine Zammit's penalty was saved by Magri and Natasha Pace hit over the rebound.

In the other match, Mosta were guilty of missing too many goalscoring chances but in the end they still managed to edge past Raiders by the odd goal in three.

Mosta took the lead after 16 minutes when Karen Lia saw Raiders goalkeeper Sonia Farrugia out of her place and beat her with a fine lob.

Victoria Saliba came close again for Mosta on two other occasions but first she saw her shot turned to a corner by Farrugia, and then missed the target by a whisker.

Raiders improved in the second half with substitute Damaris Cassar heading just wide from an Amanda Atkins free-kick. But it was Mosta who scored again on 71 minutes when Saliba's low shot hit the upright before rolling into the net.

Raiders pulled a goal back ten minutes from time when Cassar turned past her marker before firing a low shot home.
