Stompers claimed the first honour of the MRFU 2005/06 season yesterday after lifting the Ray Elliot Cup thanks to their 17-6 victory over Kavallieri at the Marsa ground.

The competition is contested by the league champions and the Barclays Cup winners from the previous season - Kavallieri and Stompers respectively.

Two Roderick Attard penalties put Kavallieri 6-0 ahead but by half-time Stompers had replied with a Bojan Nikolic try (10-6).

Play was balanced for most of the second half until Patrick Satariano went past the opponents try-line for Stompers.

The kick was converted by Matthew Mirabelli for a 17-6 score.

The match, in memory of rugby enthusiast and former Kavallieri stalwart Ray Elliot, was refereed by Don Hewer.

Elliot's widow Carmen and son Rhys presented the cup to Stompers at the end of the match.

Next week sees the start of the league championship.
