CSKA coach Gazzayev hit with record fine

CSKA Moscow coach Valery Gazzayev has been fined for unsportsmanlike conduct following his club's heated derby against city rivals FK Moscow. The Russian Football Union fined Gazzayev 130,000 roubles ($4,558), believed to be the highest fine in Russian soccer.

Russian media reported that the fine amounted to 10 per cent of Gazzayev's monthly salary. Gazzayev was outraged with referee Mikhail Khodyrev following Sunday's 0-0 draw with FK Moscow.

Witnesses said the temperamental coach was so incensed with some of Khodyrev's decisions during the game that he knocked the ball out of the referee's hands after the match.

The draw prevented UEFA Cup holders CSKA from catching city rivals Lokomotiv at the top of the Russian premier league table with five matches left in the season.

In May, Gazzayev became the first Russian coach to lead his team to a European cup trophy when CSKA beat Sporting Lisbon 3-1 in the UEFA Cup final.
