In a message to mark Teachers' Day yesterday, Malta Union of Teachers president John Bencini said one should reflect on the issues that face the country, be critical about the successes achieved and the challenges ahead and take the opportunity to recommit energies and resources to the issues that lay ahead.
Mr Bencini said discussions were going on between MUT officials and the Ministry of Education on the document For All Children To Succeed.
The proposed changes and educational reforms were extremely challenging and need to be studied in detail, he said. "Teachers need to be continually searching for means of upgrading and updating education.
"Perhaps, as never before, teachers are providing a relevant, stable learning environment in a world characterised by rapidly shifting social values, major technological changes, education restructuring and a family environment sometimes marred by a climate of stress, conflicts and social poverty," he said.
The MUT recognised the valuable contribution by teachers to society and trusted that teachers continue to inspire, challenge, guide and encourage students so that they can become confident, knowledgeable and productive citizens, Mr Bencini said.
