Italian keeper Francesco Toldo is prepared to make a return to international football but a lack of first team appearances at Inter has left him frustrated.

Toldo was long term understudy in the Italy squad to Gianluigi Buffon, currently sidelined with injury, but decided to quit the national side after Euro 2004 and has not featured under coach Marcello Lippi.

"I gave up the national team for Inter but with the injury to Buffon, if Lippi were to call me back I would return," the former Fiorentina keeper told Italy's Sky Sport.

"However, I am not playing and so I can't show what I am worth."

In the absence of Buffon, Lippi has chosen Lazio's Angelo Peruzzi and Udinese's Morgan De Sanctis as his keepers for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Moldova.

Toldo said he was disappointed to be number two at Inter behind Brazilian Julio Cesar.

"I don't feel inferior to him, he is young, though at one time to become Inter's goalkeeper you needed experience," he said.

"If Inter had told me about this situation then I would have made other choices. At the start of the season I was told other things. I have been told that I am not playing for technical reasons but I hope there isn't a prejudice against me."

Inter, aiming to win their first Serie A title since 1989, suffered a 2-0 defeat to champions and current leaders Juventus on Sunday.

Toldo, a regular for the past four seasons, believes Inter's defence has improved with the signing of Argentine Walter Samuel from Real Madrid.

"Our defence this year is stronger, Samuel has reinforced it," he said. "If only I had had a defence like that in front of me."
