Call for casual detention services officers

The spate of illegal immigrants reaching our shores has forced the authorities to issue a call for applications for the recruitment of casual detention service officers.

Three detention centres will be opened shortly and need to be manned, the commander of the detention service, Lt Col. Brian Gatt, told The Times.

It is also envisaged that those who are recruited would eventually relieve the police and soldiers carrying out such duties. Retired army or police officers can apply to be engaged as casual detention serve officers. As an incentive to apply, it has been decided that apart from a pay of Lm4,325 annually, those recruited would be able to retain their service pension.

Those selected would work on a shift basis and would also be entitled to a shift allowance.

The duties of casual detention officers is to guard closed detention centres and escort immigrants to outside locations such as hospitals.

Application forms can be obtained from Safi Barracks or from http://www.doi.gov.mt/EN/employment_opp/recruitenglish.pdf
