Children yesterday had the opportunity to do an assault course, including rope and wall climbing and crawling, and adults could try their hand at firing air rifles on a shooting range, using blanks.
These activities - not exactly run of the mill - were part of an open day by the Armed Forces of Malta at Luqa Barracks.
The four units of the AFM were seen in action yesterday, in a move away from their simple, stereotypical image of guard duty, and showing a variety of skills.
The 1st Regiment C Company, the roles of which are the main infantry training unit for the AFM and the provision of its Quick Reaction Force, carried out demonstrations of weapons, first aid and internal security, as well as rescue and engineering skills.
Static and operational displays were underway throughout the day, attracting families, with activities specifically designed to offer a hands-on experience.
Children also had the opportunity to try on a military uniform and get sent the photo home.
Together with the adults, they were able to sit in helicopters, while military equipment and weapons, such as the Bofors L40/70, were also on display in the area of the 2nd Regiment, which provides Malta's air and sea defence.
The 3rd Regiment is the AFM's main support unit, and, in addition to the regular forces, is the Emergency Volunteer Reserve Force.
The AFM band played military marches around the barracks, with displays being held on the parade ground throughout the day.
