Malta ranks very low in breastfeeding

Malta has the second lowest rate of breastfeeding in Europe and two untiring groups are working to reverse this trend through awareness.

As Malta Breastfeeding Week kicks off on Friday, the Association of Breastfeeding Counsellors and St Luke's Hospital's Midwifery Services hope to encourage more mothers to adopt this healthy habit.

The World Health Organisation has been harping on the benefits of breastfeeding arguing that a baby should be breastfed for at least six months. The week of activities starts on Friday with a half-day seminar on Breastfeeding: The Right Start at the St James Cavalier, Valletta between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. All those interested can register by calling 2595 1194 or 2123 3370.

The Association of Breastfeeding Counsellors will open its new headquarters in Floriana today week and a walk will be held on October 11 to raise awareness on breastfeeding issues, starting from City Gate, Valletta at 10.30 a.m.
