Several streets in Zabbar were mentioned as being in a terrible state in the article Streets That Time Forgot (September 6). However, our street, Triq il-Kahwiela corner with Triq l-Ghadiba near the Zabbar cemetery, has been truly forgotten!
We have been living in this street for the past 22 years and were the first residents here. We paid the road contribution in 1979 and so far our road is in a terrible state.
Nobody cares to do anything! We went to the local council office several times and everywhere we could think of, besides. Lately, my husband spoke to the assistant to the minister responsible for roads and I quote what he said: "There are more important projects on other roads than your road". So we have lost hope that one day we will have a decent road!
In summer the street is full of dust, in winter full of mud! We are faced with tyre punctures a least once a month and there are rubbish and rats everywhere.
During one of the electoral campaigns, a candidate visiting residents to lobby for votes said: "This cannot be Malta!" In fact he parked his car in the street adjacent to the cemetery in order to avoid damaging it.
How's that for the terrible state of a street that time forgot!
