IF YOUR mobile phone bleeps a text message announcement while you're on your way to University, check it out. It might be reminding you that the scholarship applications are about to close, or that your 9 a.m. faculty meeting has been cancelled.

Students on campus may now join CampusSMS, a personalised information network that maximises student life by offering an up-to-date, real-time information service, giving priority to faculty information, scholarship deadlines, travel opportunities, announcements from student organisations, and events and activities on and off campus.

This year, CampusSMS promises to be "bigger and better", by becoming a veritable hub of useful campus communication, and with a number of new developments such as a content driven, user-friendly Website for subscribers. This year there is a larger amount of content scheduled to go out. For this reason students can choose which content channels they wish to subscribe to.

CampusSMS is a forward-thinking community founded on one-to-one communication channels that forward the students with wireless content. CampusSMS's vision is that of being the first European network of wireless student content services. CampusSMS is set to establish a local presence across European markets, based on the premise that all students should have the opportunity for valuable content, sent directly to their mobile phones.

KSU, the Kunsill Studenti Universitarji, launched CampusSMS in October 2003 with great success. Over 7% of the University population signed-up in the first week. Subscribers received over 52,000 text messages throughout the scholastic year. Content included lecture changes, organisations' news, deadline reminders, job opportunities and special travel offers.

The company operating CampusSMS is Socratxt International. Established in Malta in December 2001 by two young entrepreneurs, Socratext became Malta's first wireless advanced services company. Socratxt offers wireless products and services that are innovative, very simple and easy to use. Its aim is to position the company as a leading provider of advanced mobile data services established in business and consumer markets with its presence across Europe.

The operating technology for CampusSMS has been developed in-house by Socratxt. Socratxt will launch the first CampusSMS service beyond Maltese shores this month at Trinity College, Dublin. Socratxt's Irish representative, Neil Ayton, an Economics graduate, was in Malta recently to finalise operations and management to CampusSMS in the prestigious institution that boasts 25,000 students.
