Rosberg wins GP2 championship

Nico Rosberg, son of former F1 champion Keke, won the inaugural GP2 championship with a victory in Bahrain on Thursday.

The series, using identical Renault-powered cars, supports Formula One at European grands prix with the final round held at Bahrain's Sakhir circuit.

Germany-born Rosberg could now graduate to Williams, the Formula One team with whom his Finnish father won the 1982 world championship.

Williams are looking for a replacement for Briton Jenson Button, who has bought out his contract to stay at BAR, and Rosberg is high on their list of candidates.

"It was a great season and we were quick probably from the second race onwards," said Rosberg, whose French-based ART team are run by Nicolas Todt, son of Ferrari boss Jean.

"We just progressively got faster and faster. To have had a difficult start and then come out on top at the end is just amazing."

Finland's Heikki Kovalainen, a Renault development driver, was runner-up in the championship.
