Midfielder David Pizarro's 49th minute free-kick gave Inter a 1-0 win over Rangers in their Champions League Group H match played in an empty San Siro stadium on Wednesday.
Julio Cruz struck a penalty against the post in the 38th minute and Santiago Solari missed an absolute sitter for Inter after Pizarro's strike in a game that Inter never looked in danger of letting slip.
Inter were playing the second game of a four-match ban on supporters imposed after crowd trouble at their Champions League quarter-final with Milan last season. Brazil striker Adriano was rested ahead of Sunday's Serie A game against Juventus.
"We gave them too much space in the first half but overall we deserved the win as we created plenty of chances," said Inter coach Roberto Mancini. "I hope sooner or later we will start to put away more of them.
"We obviously have the advantage in this group now with the other results going as they have. But there are still four games to go and a lot of work to do yet."
Inter lead Group H with six points after Porto, considered their main rivals, fell to a surprise 3-2 home defeat by Slovakia's Artmedia Bratislava.
"Playing without a crowd is definitely more difficult for them than us, in all fairness," said Rangers goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus.
"We were just unlucky. We got beaten by a deflection, that's actually the whole story."
